The roots are divided into the ten classes (gaṇas) of the present-tense system and accompanied by standardised meaning entries. In many cases they are also tagged with anubandhas, metalinguistic markers conveying grammatical information about the root's conjugation. Interspersed with the list are short remarks about features such as voice, accent, etc., related to a particular subset of roots. The Dhātupāṭha is traditionally attributed to Bhīmasena, who is said to have composed a commentary on it, now lost.
