Cambridge, David Loggan, 1688.

This plan is the first of Cambridge to present the city as if seen vertically from above in a style that resembles the standards and accuracy we would expect in a modern map. It appears in Loggan’s Cantabrigia Illustrata which was published in 1690 and included many illustrations of the town and colleges. David Loggan was born in Danzig in 1634, moved to London some time before 1658, and spent some time working in Oxford and London before being appointed to the role of official engraver to Cambridge University on 5 March 1690. He died in 1692.

Changes that can be seen since the earlier bird’s-eye views of the city include the remodelling and new building that had occurred at Trinity, St Catharine’s, Gonville and Caius, St John’s, Emmanuel and Christ’s Colleges, as well as the greater density of housing that had been built to accommodate a larger population and increase in commercial activity.
"
Former Owner(s)
Ludford, John"
Title
Cantabrigia illustrata, sive, Omnium celeberrim istius Universitatis collegiorum, aularum, bibliothec academic scholarum publicarum sacelli coll: regalis nec non totius oppidi ichnographia"
Material
Paper"
Publisher
Quam proprijs sumptibus typis mandavit & impressit"
Classmark
Maps.FR.x.21"
Note(s)
Engraved throughout; portrait of the Duke of Somerest as frontispiece."
Subject(s)
University of Cambridge -- Pictorial works -- Early works to 1800; Architecture -- England -- Cambridge -- Pictorial works -- Early works to 1800; Cambridge (England) -- Pictorial works -- Early works to 1800"
Associated Name(s)
Loggan, David, 1635-1700?; Speed, John, 1552?-1629; University of Cambridge"
Language(s)
Latin" } ], "@type": "sc:Manifest
Provided by Cambridge University Library.
