One of the ancient Upaniṣads, belonging to the Maitrāyaṇīya branch of the Kṛṣṇa Yajurveda. According to van Buitenen (1962), the text traditionally known under this title results from the conflation in ancient times of an original Maitrāyaṇīya Upaniṣad and a different work that was independently transmitted in south India as Maitreya or Maitrī Upaniṣad. This manuscript has been designed, laid out and bound as a western book. Although complete, it contains only the first five chapters of the work.
