Corpus Christi College MS 403 transmits the so-called 'Byzantine triad' of three plays of Euripides (b. c. 480, d. 406 BC), selected for study in Byzantine schools: Hecuba, Orestes (wrongly entitled Electra) and Phoenician Women.

The texts follow the recension (i.e. redaction) of the Byzantine grammarian Manuel Moschopoulus (13th-14th century; see Turyn 1957).

The first section (ff. 1r-41v) was copied by Hand A and comprises Hecuba and Orestes ll. 1-490; the scholia of this section are predominantly Moschopoulean. The second section (ff. 42r-118r) comprises Orestes ll. 491-end and Phoenician Women; this section was copied by Hand B, and, in addition to the Moschopoulean scholia, there are some ascribed to the Byzantine grammarian Thomas Magistros (13th-14th century).

Richard Porson, Regius Professor of Greek at Cambridge (b. 1759, d. 1808), used this manuscript for his editions of Hecuba (1797, siglum C), Orestes (1798, siglum C.C.C. vel MS.C.C.C.), and Phoenissae (1799, siglum C); the manuscript had also been previously collated by Joshua Barnes (b. 1654, d. 1712) for his edition of Euripides (Euripidis Quae Extant Omnia, 1694; only intermittent notes, e.g. on pp. 58, 65, 121, etc., on variants are from 'MS. Coll. Corpus Christi' or 'C.C.C.', i.e. CCCC MS 403, as explained by Porson in his edition of Euripides' tragedies: see the second edition, 1802, p. XVII). Before Barnes, John King (b. 1696, d. 1728) collated the manuscript for his edition of the three plays (Euripidis Hecuba, Orestes et Phoenissae, 1726).

J. Diggle designated the manuscript ('Cantabrigiensis 403') with siglum Xc in his Orestes edition (Oxford 1994).

Dr Matteo Di Franco
