Medieval and Early Modern Greek Manuscripts : Gospel lectionary (Saturdays, Sundays and weekdays)

Medieval and Early Modern Greek Manuscripts

This Gospel lectionary, probably copied in the second half of the 12th century, belongs to the fuller of the two main types, giving lections for weekdays as well as Saturdays and Sundays, except in Lent. It is a high-quality production, richly ornamented with extensive use of gold in its headpieces, its initial letters and for the text of headings and other rubrics regarding the lections. At one point a portion of a folio which would have contained a major headpiece (f. 104r) is missing, and may have been deliberately cut out for separate sale. Many entire folios have also been lost, and in the early part of the manuscript many of the surviving folios have been rebound in the wrong order.

Dr Christopher Wright
