Lewis-Gibson : Letter

Lewis-Gibson

Recto: letter in which a woman pleads with her husband to return home after he chose to abandon her in a dispute over having to stay with her family and to have to pay rent there, too. The woman states she will fast until the matter is resolved. The letter displays careful square writing and Arabic vocalisation (suggesting familiarity with Arabic script), which makes it less likely that the letter was written by the woman herself. Verso: reply by the husband in which he swears that if she fasts he will not return even on the Sabbath (as he has been doing).
