Tennyson : Notebook 'XXXVII'

Tennyson, Alfred Tennyson, Baron, 1809-1892

Tennyson

Tennyson used this small marbled-paper quarto notebook primarily to compose his 'Ode on the Death of the Duke of Wellington'. In addition to drafts of the 'Ode', the notebook contains an interpolated draft of 'Boadicea' (though the interpolated leaf appears to have come from this notebook), two drafts of 'Britons Guard your Own', and two drafts of the second stanza of 'Will'. The presence of these drafts suggests that Tennyson was using this notebook during the latter part of 1852. Many of the variants in these drafts have been unrecorded, and of particular interest are those in the draft of the 'Ode'.
