These hand-held stone tools would have been used by early farming communities in West Africa, in what is now northern Nigeria. They were collected by Sir Hesketh Bell during his Governorship of Northern Nigeria, probably in the Kano District which he visited in 1911. Together they form part of a small set of axe-heads, scrapers and hammers. Bell took a great interest in the cultural and scientific traditions and practices of the territories he was sent to administer and the Royal Commonwealth Society collections in the Library include his diaries, notebooks, letters, scrapbooks, publications and photographs.
