Shahnama Project

Three detached leaves from a ms. of the Shahnama, perhaps produced in Shaibanid Bukhara in the early 16th century (Museum notes compiled by Lisa Golombek).

970.268.1 is now 295 x 220, text block 238 x 155, thus differing slightly from the page chosen as sample page, which has been trimmed differently.

970.268.2a is the accession no. for two folios, but refers specifically to the page with the painting. The two folios are labelled 82 and 84 in Arabic numerals on the verso sides, and 359 and 362 respectively on the recto sides.

The first folio (359) has text on the recto side (text block 245 x 155), and the picture on the verso (labelled 2a).

The second folio (362) has text on both sides, with a rubric on each. The verso side is taken as the sample page for the ms.

The margins are ruled in dark blue, space, 2 thin black, thick gold, brown/gold, 2 thin black (very damaged). The columns are two x 2 thin black with gold, with the intercolumnar space left blank. The rubrics are 2 thin black with gold, royal blue, gold and olive green. The heading is written in tomato red nasta'liq against a plain ground.

Exhibited in the Sportsman's Show, CNE, Toronto, June 1974.
