Šela b. Mevasser

Cairo Genizah

Letter from Šela b. Mevasser in Alexandria to Mevoraḵ b. Saʿadya reporting on local affairs and offering best wishes for the addressee’s son, Abū l-[Bayān Moses b. Mevoraḵ b. Saʿadya]. Šela mentions various rumours that had been spread about him, and asks the Nagid to intervene against two silk dyers who have been troubling his brothers for the last three years. His brothers, Šeʿaltiʾel and Joseph, had been favoured by the authorities on account of the Nagid. He is happy to hear that Mevoraḵ and his son will be travelling from Cairo to Fusṭāṭ for the upcoming festivals. Written during Mevoraḵ’s second term as Nagid (1094-1111 CE). Address on verso.
