Cairo Genizah : Legal document

Cairo Genizah

Legal document in which witnesses testify about the sale of some goods at auction, dated Wednesday 17th Adar 1536 (= 1225 CE), in Fusṭāṭ, in the hand of Solomon b. Elijah and under the authority of Abraham Maimonides. At auction were a dressing gown, a mandīl, and a veil. The witnesses confirm that they consulted as to what the goods should achieve, then gave them to the auctioneer, who put great effort into trying to sell the items by calling out loudly in the bazaar. After the auctioneer’s fees were deducted, the dressing gown achieved 40 dirhams, the mandīl 16 dirhams, and the veil 20 dirhams. The document is a draft or copy of Or.1080 J64, which has the signatures of the witnesses: Elijah b. Zechariah and Pinḥas ha-Kohen b. Šeʾerit.
