As part of the war effort, in 1942 school girls in Sydney, New South Wales presented a mobile canteen to the Royal Empire Society to ensure school children and miners in South Wales received hot meals. The canteen was to be taken to schools and pitheads. The photograph, taken at the presentation ceremony on 21 July, shows Stanley M. Bruce, the Australian minister in London on the left, with the Australian broadcaster Colin Wills just behind him. The Minister of Food, Lord Woolton, and Lady Woolton are inspecting the canteen crockery. Colin Wills later described the event to listeners of the BBC’s Pacific Service. This 'BBC Photo' is stamped on the reverse in red ink 'Passed by Censor'. Also in pencil is written 'Wirelessed to Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia) Ltd at their request'.

The photograph is one of thirty-one which record the experiences of the Society during the Second World War.

See Janus record here
