The Dīpikā is a commentray on the Jaṭāpaṭala—a text on the manner of recitation of the Vedic saṃhitās—attributed to Hayagrīva. The commentary has been "composed in 1745 (Saṃ. 1801) at Vārāṇasī by Dayāśaṅkara, son of Dharaṇīdhara, surnamed Vyavahāra." (Abhyankar and Devasthali 1978: IV). The text is particularly significant for its thourough treatment of the topic of samaya (or galita). The manuscript consists of two codicological units, as folios 4 and 5 are a later supply. It might prove particularly valuable for the history of the text, as it has been written only 33 years after its composition (Louis de La Vallée Poussin states that the commentary has been composed in 1821 Vikrama / 1764 CE; see LVP Add.1910).
"
