After Rough\u2019s death in 1384-5 (cf. Murray, x), at least three other people had access to the manuscript before it came into the hands of Robert Benet in the sixteenth century. The first is the scribe of the short upper entry on folio 75v, <\/a>late fourteenth century. The second is the fifteenth-century scribe of the entries at 74v, <\/a>75v, <\/a>76v.<\/a> The third is the late fifteenth-century scribe on folio 75r, <\/a> potentially also the scribe of the summa foliorum notations on ff 105v <\/a> and 119v.<\/a><\/p>

Robert Benet numbered the folios, as well as making a variety of marginal annotations throughout the Register portion of the manuscript, mostly dates. He also put his signature on the verso of the first folio, <\/a>annotated the Edward IV charter, and crossed out some of the scribblings of the late fifteenth-century hand. Benet was something of a manuscript collector, and his signature appears in several volumes held by the library of St. John\u2019s College, Cambridge, as noted by James in his catalogue of the same. <\/p>

On folio 37v, <\/a> in a fifteenth-century hand, is the name \u201cThomas Hoyutt of Tendyrden\u201d written multiple times. Presumably, this is Tenterden, in Kent, though the Hoyutt or Hoyt name is not readily identified.<\/p>

On 106v<\/a> (the first folio of the paper quire), a later hand has attempted to copy the first few words of the Edward IV charter: \u201cThis is the charter of k\u201d <\/p>

The parchment is of quite fine quality, though some leaves are somewhat dirty or faded, especially folio 1 (presumably due to the leaves being unbound or bound without flyleaf for an extended period. There is evidence of scraping and reuse throughout, with obvious palimpsests visible at a few points, most notably folio 30r<\/a>. Multiple leaves show evidence of red colouring from previous use: folios 29<\/a>, 30 <\/a>, 31,<\/a>32,<\/a>33,<\/a>35,<\/a>36,<\/a>38, <\/a>39, <\/a>60, <\/a>61, <\/a>62, <\/a>63, <\/a>72,<\/a>73, <\/a> and 75.<\/a><\/p>

Folio 32<\/a> has had a section cut out.<\/p>

Folio 48<\/a> shows evidence of former thread repair.<\/p>

The paper quire has been severely damaged in the bottom outer corner, most likely by rodents, and subsequently repaired with newer paper.<\/p>

The parchment and paper sections of the manuscript were likely already bound together by the later 15th<\/sup> century, as witnessed by two notes in the same hand on the verso of the final folio of each sections noting the number of folios. The note on 105v<\/a> counts the folios as 116, indicating that at that time a further 11 folios were in existence. Two of these missing folios were cut out (between ff 90-91 <\/a> and ff 97-98),<\/a> and there is also another missing between ff 8-9 <\/a> that may have formed an outer leaf with a now-missing first leaf containing a heading for the custumal, which currently begins without heading or introduction. <\/p>" }, { "label": "Script", "value": "

A mid-to-late 14th<\/sup> century manuscript consisting largely of a register for the town of New Romney in Kent written by local clerk and fishmonger Daniel Rough. When the manuscript was bound sometime in the 16th<\/sup> century, a paper quire containing a late-fifteenth-century charter of Edward IV was also included. The register itself is of interest (beyond its status as an artefact of Kentish history) for what it may tell us regarding the use of Latin and Anglo-Norman French in the late-fourteenth century, while fifteenth-century additions in English complete the trilingual picture for later medieval and early modern England.
