Sanskrit Manuscripts

This palm-leaf manuscript of a very early date (1139 CE) contains the Śivadharma corpus. The corpus, whose earlier works possibly originated around the 6th century, usually contains from six to eight texts and deals with religious practices and doctrinal issues of the lay śaiva community. The present manuscripts contains all eight texts:
Śivadharmaśāstra
Śivadharmottara
Śivadharmasaṃgraha
Umāmaheśvarasaṃvāda
Śivopaniṣad
Vṛṣasārasaṃgraha
Uttarottaramahāsaṃvāda
Dharmaputrikā.

The internal parts of its wood covers display illuminations of both śaiva and vaiṣṇava inspiration. The manuscript was probably used also for ritual purposes, as it is suggested by traces of oblatory materials usually smeared on the cover during worship.
