The Maitrāvaruṇaprayoga is a manual for the Vedic ritual. It illustrates all the actions a Maitrāvaruṇa priest must perform and the sequence in which he must perform them. The Maitrāvaruṇa is one of the many priest needed during some of the public sacrifices enjoined in Vedic religion. He is particularly connected with the animal sacrifice and the Soma sacrifice, Soma being a ritual drink crucial to both the Vedic symbolic and practical universe.
