Western Medieval Manuscripts : Gospel lectionary (menologion)

Western Medieval Manuscripts

This fragment is a scrap from a folio of a Gospel lectionary manuscript in majuscule script, which has been tentatively identified as a product of north-western Syria in the second half of the 6th century. The main text was copied in the style known as Biblical majuscule, the type in most common use in the earliest centuries of the Christian Roman Empire, so-called owing to its use in major early Bible manuscripts. However, a heading identifying the lection was written in the Alexandrine majuscule style typical of Egyptian manuscripts.

Dr Christopher Wright
