Sanskrit Manuscripts : Gautamīśikṣa

Sanskrit Manuscripts

The Gautamīśikṣa is a śikṣā ("Teaching [on Pronunciation]") belonging to the Sāmavedic school of recitation and included in the branch of knowledge known as vedalakṣaṇa. The text is divided in two prapāṭhaka. It provides a list of all the possible consonant clusters found in the Vedic text. The largest cluster mentioned contains seven consonants. It is remarkable that a manuscript clearly produced in a Jain milieu contains a very technical treatise on pronunciation linked with Vedic recitation (see also manuscript Add.1923, which most probably has been written by the same scribe, since it shares many common features with this manuscript: script, paper and layout are identical, and on the paper envelope used as original binding this manuscript is numbered as 2) 3, while Add.1923 is numbered 2) 2).
