Cairo Genizah : Legal document

Cairo Genizah

Page (plus stub) from a legal notebook of the Fusṭāṭ Bet Din, containing part of an agreement (continued in the adjacent page, which is under the classmark Add.3414.2). The document is dated Monday 12th of Tammuz 1409 (= 1098 CE). The agreement is part of a long-running complaint between two traders, Abū Yaʿqūb Yequtiʾel b. Moses the doctor (הרופא) and Abū Yaʿqūb Joseph b. David al-Lebdī. The background to the complaint is described in Goitein and Friedman (2008: 167-196). This document states that the litigants will not take further action until a representative of Ḥasan b. Bundār has arrived. It includes some other business involving the purchase of goods in Aden and monies to be paid by a third party, Abū Yaʿqūb Joseph b. Solomon al-Qudsī. The scribe is Hillel b. ʿEli, who signs at the end of the document (Add.3414.2 recto)
