Cairo Genizah : Legal document

Cairo Genizah

Page from the notebook of the Fusṭāṭ Bet Din. It notes at the top of recto that it concerns a case between 'Abū Yaʿqūb al-Ḥakīm ('the doctor') with Joseph al-Ṭarābulusī'. The record is dated 2nd Kislev 1409 Sel. (= November 1097 CE). The parties' names in the body of the record are given as Yequtiʾel b. Moses the doctor (ha-rofe) and Joseph who is known as Ibn al-Lebdiyya ('the Lebdīs', אללבדיה). The dispute between them concerns the payment for a varied selection of goods, including textiles and finished clothes, various jugs and bowls, as well as some medicinal substances. The record is translated in full in Goitein and Friedman (2008: 167-74), and is continued in Add.3421. The leaf has been conserved the wrong way round, so the record begins on what is now presented as verso. In the handwriting of Hillel b. ʿEli.
