Rabbit Notebooks : Rabbit breeding notebook 'E, Sep. 1910 - Mar. 1911’

Rabbit Notebooks

Notebook recording rabbit breeding experiments conducted by Bateson and Punnett between 1910 and 1912, on rabbits born between circa July 1910 - March 1911. The notebook begins with a five-page index providing summary information for 240 rabbits: the sex, colour, and parentage of each, with a checkmark to indicate rabbits used for further breeding. Individual records for each rabbit begin on [1]. The general format of the record is that each animal has a separate page. The page is headed with the cross, e.g. ex 45 x 28, which denotes the parents. The records are, in general, sparser than in the previous notebooks, often with just birth date and colour noted, unless the animal was used for further breeding in which case further phenotypic characteristics may be added, along with notes on when each rabbit died or was killed.
