Ten folios from the famous Shah Tahmasp Shahnama.

There is a massive volume of studies and publications concerning this manuscript, the most celebrated and luxurious of all illustrated copies of the poem. The most recent work of Sheila Canby has reproduced the images of the whole manuscript, and a similar effort was undertaken in Tehran, where the bulk of the paintings outside the Metropolitan Museum are held (Museum of Contemporary Arts).

As the colophon page is missing and the date of most of the paintings is unknown, they have been set a generic date here of c. 1535.

Many of the folios in the Aga Khan's collection were exhibited at the Musee Rath in Geneva in 1985, see Toby Falk et al. Tresors de l'Islam, pp. 72-91.

See also, Dispersed
