Christ's College : Two treatises of government

Locke, John, 1632-1704

Christ's College

This volume, with corrections in Locke's hand, was donated to Christ's anonymously by benefactor Thomas Hollis on 20 April 1764, together with his own, freshly completed, edition of Locke's Two Treatises. Our 1698 copy is bound in red morocco, with a typical Hollis inscription on a separate piece of paper bound in before the title page: 'An Englishman, a Lover of Liberty, Citizen of the World, is desirous of having the honor to deposite this Book in the Library of Christ College Cambridge'. In a diary entry of 26 October 1763, Hollis recalled that he had purchased the copy 'by great good fortune, by accident' four days earlier from the bookseller Thomas Osborne (d. 1767), whose shop was located at Gray's Inn. The history of the copy is otherwise difficult to trace.
