St Catharine's College : Gower's Confessio Amantis
St Catharine's College

A fine copy of John Gower’s masterwork Confessio Amantis, in Macaulay’s First Recension, featuring miniatures of both the dream of Nebuchadnezzar and the Lover’s confession. While the Confessio survives in 49 manuscripts, only nineteen contain prefatory miniatures for the poem, and only 13 depict the scene of the confession. The text itself is somewhat messy, lacking eight leaves, and with disordered text in Books III and IV – likely the result of a faulty exemplar.
