Holland, Marian Rupert (1927-)

Notebooks

1952 Specialist Notebook covering the Fountain House, formally known as the Hellenistic Gymnasium. Includes the draft of a preliminary report on the area (November 1952), a list of sherds from the 'Hellenistic Gymnasium' deposited in the National Archaeological Museum, Athens and drawings (with measurements and description) of tile fragments from the Fountain House area. The notebook is used again by Holland for the 1953 season, providing measurements and levels for the area north-west of the Acropolis: Prehistoric Cemetery East (1953) and House of the Oil Merchant (1953). She includes detailed architectural drawings, with measurements, of ivory model columns from North House, House of the Oil Merchant. Also includes levels from the Lion Gate threshold and a detailed sketch, with measurements, of the Perseia lintel. Some drawings, consonant with the work of a trained architect, are exceptional e.g. of model ivory column 53-437.
On the final page Holland made a list of useful on-site English-Greek vocabulary, the Greek given phonetically in Latin script.
