Lorenzo Porzio

Western Medieval Manuscripts

The manuscript is a copy, written by the Dutch philologist and historian Theodore Rycke (1640-1690; latinized Theodorus Ryckius), of the alphabetical index of authors and works of the Greek manuscripts of the Vatican Library. The index is based on the "Grande Inventario" of the Vaticani Graeci 1-1486 by Leone Allacci (ca. 1586-1669), drawn up between 1614 and 1630 (tom. 1-2 now Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana, Vatt. gr. 2668-2669 olim Sala Cons. MSS 321-322 rosso; tom. 3 Bibliotheca Apostolica Vaticana, Vat. gr. 2664 olim Sala Cons. MSS 323 rosso). Between 1667 and 1669, Lorenzo Porzio (1604-1676; scriptor Graecus in the Vatican Library from 1654 to 1676), wrote the alphabetical index in three volumes, now collected in Vat. gr. 2665 (olim Sala Cons. MSS 42 (1-3) rosso: tom. 1, tom. 2, tom. 3). Rycke's copy appears in an abridged form and the classmarks and folios of the manuscripts have not been noted consistently.

Dr Matteo Di Franco
