Medieval and Early Modern Greek Manuscripts : Callimachus
Medieval and Early Modern Greek Manuscripts

This manuscript contains epigrams and brief fragments from the works of the ancient poet Callimachus with annotations on many of his works by Thomas Stanley (1625-1678), along with some notes regarding the content of the Chaldaian Oracles. Stanley was a poet, historian of philosophy and editor and translator of classical Greek texts. He left such annotations on a number of classical authors, but appears to have paid particular attention to Callimachus. The eminent classicist Richard Bentley (1662-1742) was accused in an anonymous pamphlet of using Stanley's notes without attribution (A Short Account of Dr. Bentley's Humanity and Justice to those Authors who have written before him, with an honest Vindication of Thomas Stanley, Esq., and his Notes on Callimachos (London 1699)).

Dr Christopher Wright
