Mediterranean Embroideries : Gable section from a bed tent

Mediterranean Embroideries

This linen panel formed the gable (koumpaso) of a multipart bed tent from a Dodecanese Island (Kos or Patmos). Bed tents were made to cover marriage beds, traditionally placed on a raised wooden platform in the corner of the room. The bride herself might have had a hand in its making. This panel depicts similar green parrots and Mediterranean galleons (ships) as those seen on the sampler to the left.
