Mediterranean Embroideries : Fragment of a skirt border

Mediterranean Embroideries

This unfinished skirt border reveals the embroiderer's underdrawings, which helped to guide her stitches. A vase full of flowers alternates with a crowned mermaid, whose two tails end in sprays of carnations. This motif originates from Venice but still appeared in Cretan embroidery long after control of the island was handed to Ottoman forces in 1669.
