Mediterranean Embroideries : Veil

Mediterranean Embroideries

Two widths of linen are joined down the middle to form this veil (khirqah). When worn (see the image nearby) the veil would billow over an elaborate headdress (saffeh). The dominant, red-threaded motifs outlined in black are characteristic of the Palestinian West Bank. Six potted carnations, common in most Mediterranean embroideries, are surrounded by wheat sheafs, abstracted date palms, and serpentine knots.
