Japanese Works : Yoshiie Ason Yoroi Chakuyō Shidai

伊勢貞丈編

Japanese Works

This book illustrates step-by-step how the historical warrior Minamoto no Yoshiie (1039?-1106?) would have dressed in his armour from his undergarments to his weapons. The final two illustrations in the book show Yoshiie in his full armour, complete with arrows and bow. The compiler, Ise Sadatake (or Teijō, 1717-1784), was a prolific writer, with his research focused on the ceremony and culture of Japan’s past. He was also a bannerman (hatamoto 旗本), a high-ranking samurai in service to the shōgun, but he lived in a time when samurai were more like civil servants than warriors.
