David Jones : Accendat in Nobis (2)

Jones, David, 1895-1974

David Jones

The inscription quotes the Latin prayer when the celebrant censes the altar at Mass, “ACCENDAT IN NOBIS DOMINUS IGNEM SUI AMORIS ET FLAMMAM AETERNAE CARITATIS” (May the Lord enkindle in us the fire of his love and the flame of everlasting charity”). The block of Latin text is framed on the left, top, and right sides by a translation of the Latin text into Welsh: ENYNNED YR ARGLWYD DAN EI SERCH YNOM A FFLAM CARIAD TRAGWYDOL. The Welsh is Jones’ own translation. At the bottom of the Latin block of text is a line in English: AID FLAME FOR SOLSTICE NIGHT, which Jones explained in a letter on the back of a photograph of the inscription sent to friends for Christmas 1961 as “because chaps used to light “aid-fires” at the Winter Solstice and also at any time when they were in distress or trouble, rather as we put up candles at shrines.”

Included in Nicolete Gray, The Painted inscriptions of David Jones, London: Gordon Fraser, 1981, catalogue 60.
