Tennyson : Notebook 'III'

Tennyson, Alfred Tennyson, Baron, 1809-1892

Tennyson

This small red duodecimo notebook was probably used by Tennyson during 1833. It contains what may be some of the earliest of the many 'Gardener's Daughter' drafts, as well as very early drafts of 'Two Voices' (one of which is here titled 'Thoughts of a Suicide'). Much of the material unique to this notebook was published for the first time by Christopher Ricks in The Times Literary Supplement, 21 August 1969. The fragment on folio 20v contains lines that appear in both 'Ulysses' and 'Tiresias'. After folio 10, the writing in the notebook is upside down and backwards relative to the foliation. As with several of the notebooks, a number of pages have been excised.
