<p style='text-align: justify;'><p>A letter from Kim Ok-kyun (1851-1894) to Sir Harry Smith Parkes (1828-1885) concerning his appointment as Minister to Korea in 1884.</p><p>Kim Ok-kyun, a government official in the Chosŏn dynasty and member of the Enlightenment Party (Kaehwadang 개화당), was well known for his advocacy of modernisation and political reform in Korea. Sir Harry Parkes was a British diplomat who served in Japan, China, and Korea during the late nineteenth century.</p><p>An English translation was added in pencil, and based on the handwriting, it is believed to be in the hand of William George Aston, who served as British Consul-General to Korea from 1884 to 1886.</p><p>김옥균의 친필 서한 (1884년)</p><p>김옥균(1851-1894)이 해리 스미스 파크 (1828-1885)의 한국 공사 취임 소식을 듣고 1884년에 보낸 친필 서한.</p><p>김옥균은 조선시대 정부 관료이자 갑신정변을 주도한 개화파의 핵심 멤버로 한국 근대화와 정치 개혁을 주창한 인물이다.</p><p>서한에는 연필로 된 영어 번역이 추가되어있으며, 필체를 보아1884년부터 1886년 까지 주한 영국 총영사를 역임한 윌리엄 조지 아스톤이 직접 해석하여 번역을 적은 것으로 추정된다.</p><p>Jiyeon Wood, Head of Japanese and Korean section.</p></p>
