Queens' College : The Foundation of the Universitie of Cambridge

John Scott

Queens' College

The first manuscript description of the foundation of the University of Cambridge was compiled in 1615 by John Scott, on the occasion of the visit of King James I. The work offers a list of founders and officers, based on Dr Caius's history of the University (1574). John Scott was an heraldic painter. Several similar manuscripts were produced in the next twenty years with one presented to the head of each College. Queens' copy dates from 1622 and is dedicated to John Davenant, President of Queens' College 1614–1622. This copy seems to have been given to King's College in the eighteenth-century before being returned to Queens' by the Provost of King's Colllege in 1950.
