This pencil sketch shows a section of Colombo harbour as it would have appeared before 1950. The landing jetty is in the centre with the booking office above. Across the road and rising above is the Grand Orient Hotel, which originally had been the residence of a Dutch governor. Tea custom sheds stretch along the waterfront to the right of the jetty. The vessel riding at anchor is the M.V. Chilka of the British Steam Navigation Company.
