Royal Observatory Greenwich Drawings and Paintings

Pencil drawing made and presented by Miss Elizabeth Smith, of Brampton near Chesterfield, Derbyshire.

In this view, the last building to the left is the Quadrant Room, the sloping roof near the right is the Advanced Building (Flamsteed's Room), and the false pediment in the distance surmounts the library. Below the library were the rooms for Airy's assistants. In the foreground, the female figure shown with a child in the garden may be Richarda Airy. The garden is shown laid to lawn, with trees and trellised flowers.

For a history of the Astronomers' Garden, otherwise known as 'The Lawn', see http://www.royalobservatorygreenwich.org/articles.php?article=969
