St John's College : Greek profession of faith for Orthodox converts to Catholicism
St John's College

This manuscript, copied in the late 16th or early 17th century, contains the Greek profession of faith for Orthodox converts to Catholicism, as revised by Pope Gregory XIII (1502-1585) in 1575. This text begins with the Nicene Creed and proceeds to a series of affirmations of the Catholic position on controversial points of doctrine. These include both those, disputed by the Orthodox Church, which had been affirmed in the Union of Florence (1439), and those, disputed by Protestants, which were the substance of the profession of faith issued in 1563 by the Council of Trent. This manuscript, written in an informal and rather wayward fashion, was copied within a few decades of the promulgation of the text.

Dr Christopher Wright
