Cairo Genizah : Letter

Solomon b. Judah (Gaʾon)

Cairo Genizah

Part of a letter, c. 1029 CE, written by Abraham, on behalf of his father, the Gaʾon Solomon b. Judah, in Jerusalem, to Sahlān Roš ha-Seder b. Abraham he-Ḥaver, in Fusṭāṭ, describing the financial problems faced by that community, high taxes and a drop in income from pilgrims due to the rebellion, and seeking the help of the recipient. The letter is brought by Joseph the cantor b. Yefet ha-Melammed, who has been sent to Fusṭāṭ on behalf of the Jerusalem community to raise funds. Greetings are also sent to the recipient’s maternal uncle, the honoured Ḥaver (i.e. Saʿadya b. Ephraim).
