Cairo Genizah

Two leaves of a court notebook with 3 cases, two of which are in the hand of the scribe Yefet b. David b. Šeḵanya. The court is described as being ‘the court instituted in the synagogue of the Palestinians in Fusṭāṭ by the High Court of Jerusalem’. The plaintiffs in some cases serve as witnesses in others. One case concerns a summons to the cantor Nehemiah b. Abraham to answer a complaint that had been made against him by Abraham ha-Levi b. Samuel. Witnessed by Moses b. Elʿazar and Ḥalfon ha-Levi b. Solomon and dated Tammuz 1343 (= June 1032 CE). In another case the court authorises Yefet b. Ṭoviyya to take 2 dinars given by Salāma b. Moses and buy flour for orphans. Witnessed by Moses b. Elʿazar (with motto), Yefet b. David, and Abraham ha-Levi b. Samuel (the plaintiff in the previous case). The beginning of a third case in a different hand and involving Ḵalaf ha-Levi b. Solomon (i.e. Ḥalfon ha-Levi b. Solomon, the witness in the previous case) is also preserved. Verso: collection of prayers.
