Cairo Genizah : Shorthand Hebrew Bible: 2 Kings 7:9-8:4; 10:6-23; 12:9-13:7; 15:20-16:6; palimpsest

Cairo Genizah

Shorthand Hebrew Bible, 2 Kings 7:9-8:4; 10:6-23; 12:9-13:7; 15:20-16:6, of the serugin type (with a focus on the word initial syllable). Relaxed abbreviation, with most words represented by at least the first two letters, and many written in full or nearly in full. The Tetragrammaton is abbreviated. There is a faded, decorated seder marker in the margin at 2 Kings 7:16. The fragment is a palimpsest, as the Hebrew is written over the top of a work in Arabic with large geometric diagrams in black and red ink. One of the axes of a circle has a label المغرب. The diagrams are on both sides of the leaves, and their size suggests an original codex of substantial dimensions, probably an astronomical work.
