Cairo Genizah : Jottings; poetry

Al-Šāfiʿī

Cairo Genizah

Recto: list in Arabic, with a brief heading in Hebrew, זרע ברוכי י׳י ('the seed of the blessed of the LORD', Isaiah 65:23) – probably referring to those in charitable need, perhaps for payment of the poll tax. The list consists of males, many with rare names, and with lower class occupations (porter, cook, seller of hazelnuts etc). It includes foreigners from Palestine, as well as ʿEli ha-Kohen, who Goitein (1971: 467) identifies with the poet ʿEli ha-Kohen b. Ezekiel. Another short text is written in a different hand and ink, mentioning the importance of knowledge and citing a poem belong to Al-Šāfiʿī (767–820): Verso: accounts.
