Cairo Genizah : Bible; colophon

Cairo Genizah

Hebrew Bible, Nehemiah 13:20-31. There is a colophon on f. 2r, at the end of the book, that states that it was copied by Joseph b. Nimorad in Gunbad-i-Mallgān (modern Dogonbadan or Gachsārān, Iran) in the year 1215. Assuming the Seleucid calendar, then this gives a date of 903-4 CE, making it the oldest dated medieval Hebrew manuscript. Joseph writes his name in atbash code at the top of the colophon. A second hand has added a few Tiberian vowels to the text, e.g. on לקדש at Nehemiah 13:22.
