Cairo Genizah : Letter

Mordechai Aškenazi

Cairo Genizah

Part of a letter in Hebrew, from Mordechai Aškenazi mentioning that a certain person has been struck down with smallpox (אגידר, i.e., جدري) and sending greetings to various friends and family members, including Samuel, Raḥamim, Zikrī and ‘my brother who is like my own soul’ Isaac Aškenazi, to whom another child has just been born. This latter is probably Isaac Luria, and hence Mordechai is Luria’s brother. The letter was probably sent from Cairo to Rašīd (Rosetta), to Mordechai’s father-in-law, but the address is not preserved.
