Cairo Genizah : Legal document; liturgy

Cairo Genizah

Recto: deed of partnership, ca. 1058 CE, between Moses b. Judah the cantor of Palermo and Ḥasan ha-Kohen b. Salmān the broker, in the hand of the Fusṭāṭ official Eli b. Amram. Moses will take various spices and aromatics worth 168 dinars and 15 24ths of a dinar to sell in Sicily in return for one third of the profit or loss. The document is the upper part of T-S 12.5, and part of a court case adjudicated by Daniel b. ʿAzarya in T-S 20.152. After the partnership was formed, Moses died and was buried at sea between Alexandria and Sicily, and the ownership of the goods came into question. T-S 20.79 is another related document (it may join with T-S NS J161 and T-S 12.5, or be a duplicate). Verso: badly faded and rubbed liturgical text (possibly a dirge), quoting biblical sources (including Psalms 92:16).
