Cairo Genizah : Letter

Naʿīm bat Abū l-Ḥasan the cantor, Naʿīm bat Abū l-Ḥasan the cantor

Cairo Genizah

Petition from the wife of Abū l-Ḥasan the miller, in Cairo, to the Gaʾon Sar Šalom (active 1177-1195 CE). She is afraid of her husband and requests that he not be permitted to force her to do embroidery in other people’s homes, or to take the income she earns. The letter is preceded by seven short lines of biblical quotations. Her name is also given at the top left of the letter, אלממלוכה זוגה בן אלמג׳אזלי, ‘the slave, the wife of Ibn al-Muḡāzalī (‘Son of the Spindle-Maker’, المغازلي)’. Her marriage contract is recorded in Bodl. MS Heb. f.56/55, dated Nisan 1186 CE, and her name is given there as Naʿīm bat Abū l-Ḥasan the cantor.
