Cairo Genizah : List; legal document

Cairo Genizah

Recto: inventory of the synagogue of the Palestinians and Babylonians in Fusṭāṭ, given to the safekeeping of the beadle of the Jerusalemite synagogue. In the hand of Meʾir b. Hillel b. Ṣadoq, dated Av 1470 (= July-August 1159 CE), and signed by Ḥayya b. Isaac and Jacob ha-Kohen b. Joseph. The inventory lists silver vessels, wooden vessels covered in silver, copper candelabras, plates, and ornamentations for the Sefer Torah, such as a silver crown, a silver crown burned in with gold, and pomegranates with niello decoration. Verso: draft of a contract, also in the hand of Meʾir b. Hillel b. Ṣadoq. The parties are Ephraim and Ibrahīm, the sum involved is 20 dinars, and Abū l-Faraj Ibn al-Kalām is also mentioned. At the top of the leaf are greetings from ‘Rabbenu Jacob’ - probably the start of a draft of a letter that was abandoned.
