Relhan Collection : 6 Great Abington church. Tomb of Sir William Halton (1639)
Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844
Relhan Collection

The tomb of Sir William Halton is an alabaster wall monument showing Halton in armour and holding an iron sword, with a lion at his feet, coats of arms and an inscription (5) above, with decoration in the baroque style of 1640. It was described by Cole 1742 as ‘all handsomely painted and gilt’, as shown by Relhan. It still shows some colour but this is much faded. Despite the armour and military accoutrements Sir William Halton had no military career but was a barrister at the Middle Temple. He lived in Abington Hall, and purchased the manor of Sternes in Stapleford from Henry North in1631. He died unmarried and left his estate to his nephew, another William Halton, Baronet of Sampford Parva in Essex. It was this Halton through whose heirs Sterne’s manor descended until it was sold to Francis, 2nd Earl of Godolphin (10 and 295) in 1734.

Palmer 1932; VCH 1982
