Relhan Collection : 13 Barnwell. Carving in stone of St Michael

Relhan, Richard, 1782-1844

Relhan Collection

Chambre Corker Townshend (1838-97) Trinity College

This carving, a fragment from Barnwell Priory (18) was excavated while making a sewer in the road opposite the Abbey Farm House, 1846. It is now (2019) on display in Saffron Walden Museum. The only candidate for the artist of this pencil drawing seems to be Chambre Corker Townshend (1838-97), Trinity College 1857-1861,so must have drawn the stone some years after it was found.

The warrior saint Michael is depicted rather quaintly as a C14 knight in full armour, with helmet, heraldic shield, plate armour and decorative belt, resting his feet on a small animal.

Pickles JD pers comm; Venn
