1820

Burwash Manor House/ University Farm. Sir Thomas Martin, son of Matthie Martin (31) inherited the estate when he came of age in 1632. He was a fierce Parliamentarian in the Civil War, knighted 1642 and killed while hunting 1650. His son Devereux Martin had such severe financial problems, presumably due to fines for his father’s Parliamentary past, that he sold the estate to the University of Cambridge 1681, and the name was changed to University Farm. The Martin’s original early C17 timber-framed and plastered farmhouse with two cross wings had been extended to the rear by two gabled wings from the main range, and added to this is a single storey kitchen wing or dairy. The tenanted building appears to have little alteration since Relhan’s time, lacking an aspirational owner/occupier or restrained by a University lease. There is still a C17 brick wall around the S of the garden, and to NE an ornamental partial moat. The original medieval moated site of Burwash manor, where early C20 excavations indicated occupation in C12, was infilled 1962.

RCHME 1968; Taylor 1997; VCH 1973
